When Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected

Eid al-Fitr marks the first day of Shawwal, immediately following the last day of Ramadan. With Ramadan 1448 expected to begin around 9 February 2027, Eid is expected on or around 11 March 2027.

The confirmed date depends on the sighting of the new crescent, so it can shift by a day and can differ between countries. Communities usually learn the final answer on the evening before, which is why fitrana should never be left until the morning itself.

Zakat al-Fitr and why the deadline is strict

Zakat al-Fitr is a compulsory charity paid at the end of Ramadan by every Muslim who has food beyond their own needs. It is due for every member of the household, including infants, and the head of the household usually pays for dependents.

Its purpose is practical: to make sure poor families can eat and celebrate on Eid morning alongside everyone else. It also serves to cover shortcomings in a person's fasting during the month.

Given after the Eid prayer it becomes an ordinary charity rather than fitrana, and the obligation is not discharged in the way it should have been. Giving several days early is encouraged so that distribution can actually be completed before the prayer.

How much fitrana to pay in 2027

Fitrana is based on the cost of a measure of staple food in your area. UNH sets it at 5 pounds per person, which buys a meaningful quantity of staples in the countries where we distribute.

Count everyone in the household. A family of five pays 25 pounds. A child born before the Eid prayer is included. There is no nisab test and no lunar year requirement, so almost every household pays it.

The sunnahs of Eid day

The day has a well known set of recommended practices, most of which take only minutes but transform the atmosphere of the morning.

• Perform ghusl and wear your best clean clothes
• Eat something sweet, traditionally dates, before leaving for the prayer
• Recite the takbir on the way to the prayer ground
• Take one route to the prayer and return by a different one
• Pray the Eid prayer in congregation
• Greet others, visit relatives and settle any strained ties

The Eid prayer itself

The Eid prayer is two units performed in congregation shortly after sunrise, followed by a sermon. There is no call to prayer and no iqamah. Extra takbirs are added in both units, and the exact number varies between schools, so follow your local imam.

Attendance is strongly encouraged for the whole household, including women and children. In many places it is held outdoors, which is itself a sunnah.

Fasting is not permitted on the day of Eid. The month of restraint is over and celebrating is the instruction.

The six fasts of Shawwal

After Eid day, six voluntary fasts in the month of Shawwal carry the reward described in the narration as equivalent to fasting the entire year, when combined with Ramadan.

They can be kept consecutively or spread across the month, whichever fits your circumstances. Anyone with missed Ramadan fasts to make up should generally prioritise those first.

Giving beyond fitrana

Many people settle their annual zakat in the final days of Ramadan so it lands before Eid, and add Sadaqah on top so families receive something extra for the day itself.

Eid gifts for orphan households, new clothes for children and a decent meal for a family who has spent the month short of food are the most common requests our field teams make at this time of year.

If you missed the last ten nights, Eid is still a good moment to give. The reward of charity does not close with Ramadan, and the need does not either.

Planning ahead for next year

Two simple habits remove almost all of the last minute rush. First, set your annual zakat date and note it in your calendar. Second, pay fitrana for the whole household in the third week of Ramadan rather than the final night.

A monthly Sadaqah commitment spreads the cost of your giving across the year, which usually means you give more overall without feeling it in a single month.

How fitrana is actually delivered

Fitrana given in cash is pooled and converted into staple food or its equivalent value for poor households, then distributed in the final days of Ramadan. Buying locally keeps costs down, supports local traders and means the food is what families actually eat.

Distribution takes days, not hours. Lists have to be checked, supplies bought, packs assembled and journeys made, sometimes over difficult roads. That is the practical reason charities ask for fitrana a week before Eid rather than on the night.

Where a household is better served by cash than by a food pack, many scholars permit giving the value instead, and field teams judge that case by case.

Celebrating without excess

Eid is a day of genuine celebration, and there is no virtue in making it austere. There is also no virtue in overspending. The balance most families find is a good meal, modest gifts for children and time spent with relatives rather than an expensive event.

One habit worth keeping is setting aside a portion of the Eid budget for a family who has nothing. A single food hamper or a set of new clothes for a child changes the day completely for the household that receives it.

Reconciliation is part of the day too. Eid is the traditional moment to repair a strained relationship, and it costs nothing but a phone call.
