Zakat 2026
Everything you need to work out and pay your Zakat this year: the nisab threshold, the 2.5% rate, what counts as zakatable wealth, common mistakes, and where your Zakat goes.
What is Zakat?
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and the only pillar that is entirely financial. It is a fixed annual payment of 2.5% on the surplus wealth a Muslim has held for one full lunar year, given to eight categories of people named in the Qur'an. It is not charity in the loose sense of a voluntary gift. It is a due, an obligation and a right the poor hold over the wealth of the rich, which is why Islamic law treats it with the same seriousness as prayer.
For most people in 2026 the practical questions are simple ones. Do I owe Zakat at all? On which of my assets? How much is it in pounds? And when exactly do I have to pay it? This guide answers each of those in order, so you can finish the year knowing your Zakat is calculated correctly and delivered to people who genuinely qualify.
The Zakat rate in 2026
The rate has not changed and will not change: 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth. On £10,000 of qualifying wealth that is £250. On £4,000 it is £100. The rate applies to cash, gold, silver, business assets and certain investments, not to your income. This is one of the most common misunderstandings. Zakat is a wealth tax in Islamic terms, not an income tax, so a high earner who spends everything may owe very little while a modest earner with savings may owe more.
A small number of asset classes carry different rates. Agricultural produce is assessed at 5% or 10% depending on irrigation, and livestock follows its own schedule. For the overwhelming majority of donors in the UK, 2.5% is the only figure that matters.
Nisab in 2026: the threshold that decides if you pay
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must hold before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is defined in two ways: the value of 87.48 grams of gold, or the value of 612.36 grams of silver. Because silver is far cheaper by weight, the silver nisab produces a much lower threshold, often only a few hundred pounds, while the gold nisab can run into several thousand.
Most scholars serving UK communities recommend the silver nisab. It brings more people into the obligation, which is the point: nisab exists to protect the poor from being overlooked, not to protect the comfortable from paying. Our calculator uses the silver nisab by default and lets you switch to gold if your scholar advises it. Metal prices move daily, so the pound figure changes through the year, which is why we recalculate it rather than publish a fixed number.
You only need to be above nisab on your zakat anniversary, and ideally at the start of the year as well. Dips in the middle of the year do not break the cycle for most schools of thought.
What counts as zakatable wealth
Include cash in hand, current accounts, savings accounts, digital wallets and any money held for you by someone else. Include gold and silver in any form, including jewellery under the Hanafi position, valued at what you would receive if you sold it today rather than what you paid. Include shares, funds and pension pots you can access, cryptocurrency, and money loaned to others that you reasonably expect back. If you run a business, include stock held for resale, raw materials, and cash in the business account, and read our Zakat on business guide for the detail.
Leave out your home, your car, your furniture, your work tools and your everyday clothing. These are personal use assets and Zakat is not due on them however valuable they are. Property is the area that causes the most confusion, so we have written a separate guide on Zakat on property: the short version is that a home you live in is exempt, rental income is zakatable once it sits in your account, and a property bought purely to flip is zakatable at market value.
What you can deduct
Deduct debts that are due now. That means this month's rent or mortgage payment, outstanding bills, the current instalment on a car finance agreement, and any money you owe a person and must repay imminently. You do not deduct the entire outstanding balance of a twenty five year mortgage, and you do not deduct future living costs. Deducting long term debt in full would wipe out most people's Zakat entirely, which is not the intent of the ruling.
Student loans in the UK are treated by most scholars as deferred and income contingent, so they are generally not deducted. If in doubt, deduct only what a creditor could demand from you today.
Your Zakat anniversary and deadlines in 2026
Zakat is due once every lunar year, counted from the date your wealth first crossed nisab. That date is your zakat anniversary, and it moves roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year because the lunar year is shorter. If you have never set one, choose a date you will remember and record it. Many people in the UK use the first of Ramadan, both because the reward for good deeds is multiplied and because the date is impossible to forget.
Zakat should be paid as soon as it falls due. Delaying it without reason is discouraged, and the money is no longer fully yours once the year completes. Paying early is allowed and can be sensible if you want to align with Ramadan or a payday. Looking ahead, our Ramadan 2027 page has expected dates and a countdown.
Working it out in five minutes
Add up your cash, the resale value of your gold and silver, your accessible investments and any business assets. Subtract debts due now. Compare the result with the nisab. If you are above it, multiply by 0.025. That figure is your Zakat. Our Zakat calculator does all of this on one screen and shows a donate button with the amount already filled in, so there is no re-typing and no rounding errors. Business owners should use the business Zakat calculator instead, which handles inventory, receivables and ownership share.
Who can receive your Zakat
The Qur'an names eight categories: the poor, the needy, those employed to administer Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, the debt ridden, those striving in the path of Allah, and the stranded traveller. Zakat cannot go to your parents, grandparents, children or grandchildren, nor to your spouse, and it cannot be used for building costs, salaries outside the administration category, or general running expenses.
At UNH your Zakat is held in a restricted fund, kept fully separate from Sadaqah and from our running costs, and released only to recipients who meet one of the eight categories. That separation is not a policy we can bend, and it is the reason we ask donors to optionally add a small contribution to cover administration rather than taking it from the Zakat pool.
Common mistakes to avoid in 2026
Paying on income instead of wealth. Forgetting gold jewellery sitting in a drawer. Valuing gold at purchase price rather than today's resale price. Deducting an entire mortgage. Missing money owed to you by friends or family that you expect to be repaid. Paying Zakat to a cause that does not qualify, however worthy it is. And the most frequent one of all: setting no anniversary date, then paying a rough amount whenever guilt strikes. Ten minutes of record keeping once a year removes every one of these problems.
Where your Zakat goes
Your 2026 Zakat funds food parcels for displaced families, clean water access, support for orphaned children and emergency relief in crisis zones. Every pound in the restricted fund reaches an eligible recipient. If you would like to give beyond your obligation, Sadaqah covers the wider work that Zakat is not permitted to fund, and you can give Sadaqah here.
Give your Zakat today
If you already know your figure, give it now and be done. If you do not, the calculator takes a few minutes and gives you a number you can rely on for the rest of the year. Either way, do not let the date drift. Zakat delayed is a right withheld from someone who is waiting on it.
