Do not deduct the whole outstanding balance of a long term mortgage, only the payment due now.

How the zakat calculation works

Zakat is 2.5 per cent of your net zakatable wealth, paid once your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab threshold for one full lunar year. The calculation is simply assets minus immediate liabilities, checked against nisab.

What is the nisab threshold?

Nisab is the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Since silver is far cheaper, the silver nisab is the lower bar and the more cautious choice. Read our full nisab guide.

Which debts can I deduct?

Only what is due immediately: overdue bills, this month's housing payment, credit card balances due now and short term loans.
