How business zakat works
Zakat on a business is paid on trading assets, not on the tools you use to trade. Add up business cash, stock held for sale, money customers owe you and short term investments, then deduct debts due within the year. If your share of the balance is at or above nisab and has been held for a lunar year, 2.5 per cent is due.
What is not zakatable
Premises, vehicles, machinery, computers, furniture and other fixed assets used to run the business are excluded. So are long term loan balances that are not due within the year.
How do I value stock?
Value stock at the retail price you would realistically sell it for on your zakat due date, not the price you paid for it.
Personal wealth too
This tool covers the business only. For personal cash, gold and silver use the personal zakat calculator, or read our nisab guide.
