Zakat al-Fitr
£5 per person, on behalf of every member of your household. Pay it in the last days of Ramadan so it reaches the poor before the Eid prayer.
What is Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr, also called Fitrana, is a small fixed charity due at the end of Ramadan. It is separate from zakat on wealth: it is owed by everyone who has food beyond their needs on the day of Eid, regardless of savings or the nisab threshold.
Who pays it?
The head of the household pays on behalf of everyone they provide for: themselves, their spouse, their children and any other dependents. At £5 per person, a household of five pays £25 in total.
Why it matters
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, made it obligatory so that the poor could celebrate Eid without having to ask. It purifies the fasting person from any shortcomings in their fast and feeds a family on the day of celebration. Your £5 is delivered as food to families who qualify for zakat.
When to pay
