Zakat threshold

Zakat nisab 2027: the threshold before zakat is due

Nisab decides whether you owe zakat at all. Here is how the 2027 threshold is set and how to check yourself in under five minutes.

In short

Nisab is the minimum wealth you must hold before zakat becomes obligatory. It is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver, valued at today's market price. If your net zakatable wealth stays at or above nisab for one lunar year, you owe 2.5 per cent of it.

  • Gold nisab: 87.48 grams (7.5 tola)
  • Silver nisab: 612.36 grams (52.5 tola)
  • Zakat rate: 2.5 per cent of net zakatable wealth
  • Holding period: one full lunar year (hawl)

How the 2027 nisab is worked out

Nisab is not a fixed pound figure. It is a weight of metal, so its value in pounds changes every day with the gold and silver markets. To find today's nisab, multiply the weight by the current price per gram.

Our zakat calculator applies indicative rates for you, so you can see whether you are above or below the line without checking bullion prices yourself.

Gold nisab or silver nisab?

Silver is far cheaper by weight, so the silver nisab is a much lower threshold. Using silver means more people qualify to pay and more money reaches those entitled to receive it, which is why most charities and many scholars recommend it.

If your wealth is held mainly in gold, the gold standard is normally applied. Where you are unsure, the silver standard is the more cautious and more generous choice.

Checking your own position

Add up cash, bank balances, savings, shares, business stock, money owed to you and the market value of any gold or silver you own. Subtract debts due now and immediate bills. If the remainder is at or above nisab, zakat is payable at 2.5 per cent.

  • Cash in hand and in every account
  • Savings, ISAs and pension pots you can access
  • Shares, funds and crypto at market value
  • Gold and silver by weight and purity
  • Money lent out that you expect back

No. Zakat is not obligatory below nisab, though voluntary Sadaqah is always welcome and carries reward at any amount.

What if my wealth dips below nisab during the year?

Most scholars hold that a dip during the year does not break the count, as long as you are at or above nisab on your start date and on your zakat anniversary.
