A shared meal being served to the poor during Ramadan

For those unable to fast

Fidya

£7 for each fast you cannot make up. A full month of missed fasts comes to £210 and feeds a person in need for every day.

What is Fidya?

Fidya is a payment due from anyone who cannot fast in Ramadan and has no realistic prospect of making the fasts up later. For each day missed, you feed one person in need. We set it at £7 per day, the cost of a proper meal.

Who should pay Fidya?

  • The elderly who are too frail to fast
  • Those with chronic illness where fasting would cause harm
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women advised not to fast, where they cannot make the days up

If your illness is temporary and you can fast later, you make up the fasts instead of paying Fidya. Fidya is only for those who genuinely cannot catch up.

How much do I owe?

Count the days you will miss and multiply by £7. Ten days is £70, twenty days is £140, and the whole month is £210. If you are unsure of your situation, ask a local scholar before deciding between Fidya and making up the fasts.

Where your Fidya goes

Every pound of Fidya buys food for families in need through our local delivery partners. If a fast was broken deliberately without a valid reason, that is Kaffarah, a different and heavier payment. See key dates on the Ramadan 2027 hub.
