What is Kaffarah?
Kaffarah is the expiation owed when a Ramadan fast is deliberately broken without a valid reason such as illness or travel. The traditional expiation is fasting sixty consecutive days. For those unable to do that, it becomes feeding sixty people in need for each fast broken.
How much is Kaffarah?
At £7 per meal, feeding sixty people comes to £420 for each deliberately broken fast. Two broken fasts would be £840, and so on. It is intentionally weighty: the payment reflects the seriousness of the obligation.
Kaffarah or Fidya?
The two are often confused. Fidya is £7 per day and applies to those who cannot fast for a valid reason and cannot make the days up. Kaffarah applies only when a fast was broken deliberately. If you are unsure which applies to you, ask a qualified scholar.
